If memory serves right, there were rumors of a possible snow day on Wednesday. Upon learning this information, I was quite obviously thrilled which is saying something, because it usually takes a lot to earn my interest. I know I am not alone when I say that waking up before seven is probably the most horrific routine of the day, and by Wednesday I would given just about anything to sleep in just one more day. So naturally, the thought of a snow day was, to say the least, exciting.
However, there was a problem that separated me and those extra hours of sleep that I so longed for: Fulton County is a prick when it comes to snow days. I have learned in the past that when there is a snow day, Fulton County will completely disregard all of the ice on the roads and force thousands upon thousands of grumpy kids to risk their lives just sit through another day of classes. I knew that I could only pray that Fulton County to just find some kindness deep inside of its grotesque and evil heart.
As Thursday came, there seemed to be some certainty in my peer’s voices whenever a snow day was mentioned. Even some of my teachers saw a good possibility of a snow day occurring. “Have they forgotten what county we reside in?” I would think to myself, “Certainly we will all be forced to come to school on Friday.” Obviously snow begins to fall towards the end of class thus meaning that there is no way we will be going to school tomorrow. Something told me that we could not get off the hook that easy.
Naturally, Thursday evening, I notice that the now has stopped falling, and I remember that I should probably go check the school closings. I see that about half of the counties are already closed and to my dismay I discover that Fulton County is not listed as closed. “I guess I should have known”, I complained, “Who would have guessed that Fulton County would be that guy to ruin everyone’s fun?” Jealous, I had to complain to some of my friends in neighboring counties that already had their schools closed. One friend in particular was so sure that I would not being go to school tomorrow that he offered to bet five dollars with me. Needless to say, I snapped called his bet thus giving me a win-win scenario. If there was no school on Friday, then I would be content paying five dollars to sleep in and put off another day of school, and if there was school on Friday then I would have received the consolation of five dollars.
Anxious to know my fate, I frantically refreshed the school closings page about every ten or twenty minutes beginning at about eight o’clock. There was absolutely no new update on Fulton County’s status, and at about ten thirty, I was almost sure that we would have school tomorrow. Already complaining about how early I had to wake up the next morning, I was beginning to become frustrated. And then suddenly, upon one last refresh at eleven o’clock my savior appeared on the page. I stared in disbelief as I read: “Fulton County Closed Tomorrow”. Surprised, I reread the page once more and once more again, but I was still filled with shock. See! Even Fulton County has a heart!
