Snow Blunders, Brats, and Basketball

All of the roads are shut down. We are in an economic crisis that supersedes all since the Great Depression and nobody can get to work. Businesses, stores and restaurants are shut down because nobody can get to them. Who doesn’t love a snow day?

The aforementioned series of exaggerations regarding snow days does not, however, apply to the snow days that take place in Johns Creek, Georgia. A quarter of an inch of snow is shed on a few main roads and the world stops. Supposed black ice is spotted on the street and that road, as well as all other roads that look black and somewhat shiny are shut down for the day. Kids rejoice and the Fulton County Schools Board of Education turns suicidal. The North mocks us and our sally ways. But who is complaining?

My winter wonderland was ruined within two hours. A bunch of midgets with sleds thought it would be cool to ride down the big hill (aka my front lawn). I whipped out the BB gun and stormed the front door only to find the situation a lost cause. The little bit of snow that previously blanketed the sled-riding jackpot of my lawn was all mushy. Needless to say, I think I made a statement strong enough to prevent this tragedy from occurring next snow day. So far, there has been no law suite filed from the over-protective, over-insured young couple caddie corner to my house. I can’t stand the brats. That was my snow. Use your own yard kid!

On another note, all of my basketball games for the weekend were cancelled. At first I was disappointed at this, but I soon realized that there was a Georgia Tech vs. Duke basketball game that was to take place Saturday afternoon. My brother jumped on the opportunity and got me a ticket. As I have noted in previous journals, I am highly interested in attending school at either Georgia Tech or Duke, so I wasn’t sure who I was going to root for. But, once I got into the coliseum and surrounded myself with hardcore Yellow Jacket fans, my decision was made quickly. After an intense game, Georgia Tech upset Duke with a six point victory. I wonder if the Georgia Tech win was a sign that I should go to Georgia Tech over Duke. But then again, I haven’t been accepted to either school yet. That could be potentially problematic.

When thinking about my college aspirations, I am always reminded of how close college actually is. I have one more semester of junior year then I am essentially done. College applications are filled out before senior year comes to a close, so there is not much that can be done after that. One more semester of hard work in the classroom may soon yield a lifetime of success past college.

As basketball season is approaching its end, I am starting to shift focus to the next sport in season--lacrosse. I have never played organized lacrosse in my life. How can the coach expect me to just step on the field and rely on my athleticism? I hope his intentions serve me well. I am excited to start a new sport, yet I am skeptical of how I will do with such little experience. It’s going to be a long road to improvement, but I’m willing to put the work in.
