Go Green

We eat it, drink it, smell it, hear it, buy it, and most importantly, we use it. It is the environment. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary the environment is either the circumstances, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded, the complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors (as climate, soil, and living things) that act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival, or the aggregate of social and cultural conditions that influence the life of an individual or community. The air, water, earth, and life around us are all part of a larger system that has been created to work together in order to sustain life. The problem the blue planet is facing today is that after all of the years that humans have left their mark on the face of the earth we are starting to see detrimental effects. Rivers are running with foul and polluted water, nuclear waste is being buried in the hearts of mountains, oil and trash is threatening the lives of countless marine animals, more species are going extinct every day from heavy deforestation in rainforest areas, and humans are finally realizing that they are contributing to the crumbling of an environment that would have been just fine had we not been in it.

People have been alerted of the destructive path that humanity has been traveling. Huge “Go Green” Campaigns have been launched all across America. There are commercials that encourage recycling, movies and television shows that attempt to bring peoples attention back to the environment, and new technology that claims that it is energy efficient and earth friendly. The new fad is to have a hybrid car, an extensive recycling system, or even just a bag that has been stamped with the recycling emblem and the words “reduce, reuse, and recycle”. Green is the new black.

But despite the new trend of “greenliness” there are people who do not understand what all of the craze is all about. They do not have an understanding of the term “global warming” or scoff at the idea that humans could be slowly, or quickly, killing the planet. Attention was brought to the topic of global warming by Al Gore. He made public announcements and even wrote books about his belief that an increase in earth’s atmospheric and oceanic temperatures were predicted to occur due to the greenhouse effect resulting mainly from pollution. This greenhouse effect occurs when gases are released into the atmosphere and trapped there. They heat up and, like the plant in a green house, so does the earth. Unfortunately for Gore’s theory many places on earth have been experiencing uncharacteristically cold weather and areas such as Georgia have had winters to rival those of areas much farther north.
However, whether or not global warming is true is not actually a fundamental argument in the quest for a healthier environment. It was simply a catalyst that got the general public concerned for their environment and caused a general interest in preserving the home planet. People love green spaces, animals, and the hope of tomorrow and those sentiments are what are driving forward the campaigns for better technology and better methods of conservation. So go ahead and jump off of the band wagon of big cars and big waste and join in the carpool line of people who care about their earth and want to insure that the generations to come will have clean air to breath and fresh water to drink.

  1. I never thought about how complex of a definition the word environment has, and I was interested by Elizabeth's intro about all the intertwining aspects of culture, life, people, climate and ecology that this word refers to. I agree with Elizabeth's main idea that people are just now starting to notice our species' impact on the environment after many many years of abuse, pollution, waste, and destruction. Our friendly "blue planet" is surely bound for permanent decline if we as humans don't do anything to prevent it. Now with all the GO GREEN campaigns and conservation programs, green is the new black as Elizabeth mentions and it becomes obvious just by taking a glance in peoples' garages. The ever heating planet is facing serious greenhouse gas effects that are leading to weather extremes: hotter summers and colder winters. Global warming, whether true or not, has brought attention to the topic of environmental conservation which is a very positive thing out of a very negative event. We must all come together to save the planet and conserve its beauty for the future generations to come, just as Elizabeth says!

  2. I agree that the “Go Green” campaign is present in society. I do not agree that the Hybrid car is popular though. She states that it is a new fad. I do not think the Hybrid car is popular enough to be considered a fad. There are different types of Hybrids and you do see them but can not be considered a fad due to them not being something that everyone talks about. No one thinks they must go get a Hybrid to help recycle energy and conserve fuel. Not a lot of people really care about recycling or helping the environment. I think most people that get a Hybrid vehicle is really getting it to save money on gas not realizing they are help saving our environment. Most of the Hybrids I see came around during the gas shortage and the economic recession in 2009.

She does introduce the common sight of different items in our society having the recycle emblem on it. I never really thought about how common it is to see it now. This shows an increase in interest in recycling to help our environment, which relates to her overall message about the “Go Green” but still does not show it being a new fad or the new black.

I disagree with the statement about global warming and the greenhouse effect not being a main argument in our society. I think it is a major argument that multiple scientists argue and debate about. The presence of recyclables and Hybrid vehicles are due to people wanting to preserve our planet. She later states that people are concerned about having green areas and other things. Hybrid cars do not help keep green areas or limit expansion in our society. It helps prevent global warming by using less fuel, which shows society’s fear about the o-zone and the greenhouse effect. This shows that global warming is a main argument and issue.

  4. Elizabeth offers insight into a topic of confusion and frustration that helps a reader cope with this issue. Although her repetitive phrase "the fad" seems naive, Elizabeth's eye opening theory of the global warming being a catalyst for change brought a refreshing idea to the repetitive issue. First, the idea that global warming is just a fad is like a dog humping your leg; annoying and inappropriate. Her obvious awareness of the subject made me have a higher standard for her diction choice. Global warming or the protection of our environment and surroundings is not like a new Prada shoe that is in season. This issue should be feared as highly as an extreme stock market crash. What we are experiencing today is a stock market crash of our surroundings; the very thing that provides us with food, water, and shelter.

However, it is unfair to not applaud Elizabeth for changing, if not others, at least one readers outlook on the issue. Her point of global warming and Al Gore’s theory being one of the reasons for change in society is admiringly insightful. At the end of the day it does not matter whether or not global warming is a made up fantasy by some environmental guru or a theory darn near close to a fact, it resulted in the change of the way people in society think, eat, function, and treat the environment. The mere fact of the matter is huge strides have been taken in the past five years to protect the area we contain and cut down on the damage we are causing our habitat. Realizing we are doing wrong and trying to fix it is the first step to a more promising future. Who knows maybe if we cut down on killing our environment, we will be able to cut down the diseases and cancer-causing substances we battle on a daily basis.
